One step further to becoming a tech diver. Tomorrow I’m taking the Nitrox course.
Unfortunatly the Baltic Sea is not deep enough in an acceptable distance so the course is ‘just’ theory.
Funny advertising and a nice solution by the way !

ANT+ Between MSP430 and Android
“Smartphones are equipped with dizzying array of wireless communication capabilities. Some of these features just go totally unnoticed. One such wireless communication protocol is called ANT+. A friend of mine wanted to make a working prototype of an idea he had using ANT+ technology. While there are other mcu’s (read atmega/arduino) already had some libraries and code written for communicating against ANT+, it wasn’t enough for me.
What I was more interested in was to leverage the ANT+ radio to not just receive data, but also send data. I wanted the mcu to interact with the world and use ANT+ to transmit data to my cellphone, for example.”

“ANT™ is a proven protocol and silicon solution for ultra-low power practical wireless networking applications. Designed for 2.4 GHz operation, ANT is perfectly suited for any kind of low data rate sensor network topologies in personal area networks (PANs) and practical wireless sensor networks (WSN).
ANT has been intentionally engineered to simplify practical wireless network development and optimize network efficiency. ANT-powered network nodes can operate for years on a coin cell battery compared to months for other technologies. Rich in capabilities, ANT provides reliable data communications, flexible and adaptive network operation and cross-talk immunity. ”

Today was the first time I realized this technology. It’s definitly worth further investigation.

I’m really addicted to the products from Apple. The new member in the team is a 13,3″ Macbook Air with 256 GB SSD. The boot time speed is awesome.
Magnetic deviation is the error induced in a compass by local magnetic fields, which must be allowed for, along with magnetic declination, if accurate bearings are to be calculated.

So it’s a good idea to hold the compass and the torch in different hands !

The duck test is a humorous term for a form of inductive reasoning. This is its usual expression:
If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.
The test implies that a person can identify an unknown subject by observing that subject’s habitual characteristics. It is sometimes used to counter abstruse arguments that something is not what it appears to be.”

I’m starting many approaches to start reading more of my books on an appropriate reading device. Unfortunately there wasn’t good hardware out there for me until now. I ordered the new Amazon Kindle for just 99 € and it’s really the eBook reader of choose in my personal opinion. It’s small, lightweight and had a nice price.
The iPad is too heavy and other hardware isn’t exactly what I want to have. The Kindle is still a must buy!

“Microsoft continues to innovate in vision-based interaction and software designed for touch. With the introduction of the next generation of Surface, using PixelSense technology, we’ll bring more tables and walls to life with amazing natural experiences for people to enjoy together,” said Panos Panay, general manager, Microsoft Surface. “We partnered with Samsung because of its strengths in LCD technology, hardware design and manufacturing, and worldwide marketing and sales of large-format displays. The companies have built an incredibly successful collaboration that moved from invention to development to manufacturing and sales of a high-quality, industrialized commercial product.”
“Samsung collaborated with Microsoft to bring the Surface experience to a new, thin design with powerful vision-based capabilities in the LCD market. The Samsung SUR40 for Microsoft Surface delivers an interactive experience not available anywhere else and will change the way companies engage with their customers,” said Jeong-Hwan Kim, senior vice president of Display Sales & Marketing team at Samsung Electronics.
Microsoft and Samsung worked closely to develop the LCD panel and the new hardware product, which is being manufactured by Samsung and will be sold to business customers through its broad distribution and reseller network.”
Product Details
Samsung SUR40 will bring companies around the world new ways to help drive sales, showcase their brand, and increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. The product features include these:
| • | PixelSense. PixelSense gives an LCD display the power to recognize fingers, hands and objects placed on the screen, including more than 50 simultaneous touch points. With PixelSense, pixels in the display see what’s touching the screen and that information is immediately processed and interpreted. |
| • | Microsoft Surface software. Microsoft Surface software provides business customers with a premier touch-first experience for their end users, built on the principles of direct interaction and together computing, with a new look and feel. It also allows commercial application developers to use a new version of the Microsoft Surface SDK and familiar Microsoft development tools to take full advantage of the massive multitouch and object recognition capabilities of PixelSense and deliver experiences not possible on any other platform. |
| • | Designed for commercial environments. The product is designed to meet the challenges of active usage in demanding locations such as retail, hospitality and education. |
| • | Thin form factor with multiple configuration options. The product is four inches thin, which makes it easy to use horizontally, hang vertically with the VESA mount, or embed in walls or custom enclosures. Standard legs are available or customers can design and attach their own. |
| • | Forty-inch full high-definition (HD) 1080p screen. The 40-inch screen enables unparalleled multi-user experiences in full HD 1080p, with a 16:9 aspect ratio and 1920×1080 resolution. |
| • | Powerful embedded system. The product uses the embedded AMD Athlon™ II X2 Dual-Core Processor 2.9GHz paired with the AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series GPU featuring DirectX 11 support to deliver significant processing horsepower and outstanding graphics capability. |

Definitely a must have gadget especially since Samsung joins the Team and the prive hopefully drops into an acceptable range. When the surface will be available and the price is still under the 3000 € / unit we’ll order 4 pieces for our conference rooms.
Tomorrow the next Apple store in Germany opens it’s doors at 10.00 AM.
Jungfernstieg 12, 20354 Hamburg
I don’t know if there will be some opening offers but I think I’ll check that by myself. Maybe I’m lucky and can get a good deal.
